Thong Yod is an ancient Thai dessert typically served during auspicious ceremonies. It is made from a mixture of egg yolk and flour boiled in syrup. The two main ingredients - egg yolk and flour are known as signature ingredients in Portuguese dessert making as they came to Thailand over 300 years ago, through revolution with Thai cookery). It is in the family of desserts, of which the names all are combination of a word "Thong" (meaning: Gold); e.g., Thong-yib (Golden Flower), Thong-yod (Golden Drop), Foi-thong (Golden Thread), all meaning to endow those who eat them with gold (riches) and good fortune.
